This novel is dedicated to all the unsung, under appreciated—strapped for cash because the company keeps cutting your hours and using bad performance reviews to deny you the raises you deserve—associates who come in every day and make Wally-world what is. I know who you are or were and I appreciate all your hard work.

Why did the author write this and why should you read it? Good question. I'm not Bill Gates or any other highly famous and certainly much more successful businessman. I didn't exactly write it to get even with those who so maliciously persecuted me out the door of a career I loved. You could look at it as if it's some kind of soul healing exercise from a person who can't afford a good psychologist. It is all of that—but it's something much more too. By writing all of this down I found the strength and courage to climb back in the ring for another round—like that admirable American icon—Rocky.

This is one person standing up for all the associates at Wally-world who work so hard without much recognition or reward. It's for every person who dared to invest their heart and soul into their work because they believed it defines them as a person. And finally, it's for anyone who has ever found themselves in the same position as me.

If that doesn't interest you, well...It is kind of humorous...
Call it a warning to those who foolishly invest their heart and soul in place devoid of anything that resembles moral principles...

Steve Jobs is Walter Isaacson’s fourth major biography, and it was his account of the lives of Albert Einstein and Benjamin Franklin that led Steve Jobs to approach Isaacson about writing his own biography. Steve Jobs was the natural-born son of John Jandali and Joanne Schieble. Jandali was a teaching assistant from Syria and Joanne was a Catholic girl from Wisconsin whose parents disapproved of her relationship with a Muslim. Unable to wed, they gave their baby up for adoption and baby Steve was adopted by Paul and Clara Jobs of San Francisco, California. Paul Jobs was an engine technician turned car mechanic, and he introduced Steve to the world of engineering and design, instilling in him many of the principles of good design that are so characteristic of Apple products.

Still, Jobs struggled at times with the circumstances surrounding his birth, and he expressed mixed emotions about both sets of his parents. “Abandoned. Chosen. Special. Those concepts became part of who Jobs was and how he regarded himself.”

The Jobs family soon moved south of San Francisco to Palo Alto, right as the Silicon Valley technology boom was getting under way. There, Steve went to school where he was often bored and bemused by authority. He frequently found himself in trouble for pulling pranks but his parents never punished him for his shenanigans and they challenged the school to keep him engaged. According to Steve, the only time that Paul Jobs ever got mad was later in high school, when he discovered that Steve was experimenting with marijuana and LSD. It was in high school that Steve began realizing that while he had a head for electronics and technical design, he also possessed a keen aesthetic sense and a deep appreciation for music and art.

Malcolm Gladwell is a staff writer for The New Yorker and author of a number of multiple bestsellers including The Tipping Point, Outliers and Blink. Gladwell was inspired to write Blink after three police officers detained him because he resembled a rapist.

When Gladwell realized that he and the rapist only shared a similar haircut, he began to think about how much emphasis people put on their instant perceptions. Blink is Gladwell’s venture into the world of rapid cognition.

Through his research, Gladwell found that humans are strongly influenced by the rapid judgments they make on a daily basis. Created in 1982 by Gaston Glock, an obscure Austrian curtain-rod manufacturer, and swiftly adopted by the Austrian army, the Glock pistol, with its lightweight plastic frame and large-capacity spring-action magazine, arrived in America at a fortuitous time. Law enforcement agencies had concluded that their agents and officers, armed with standard six-round revolvers, were getting "outgunned" by drug dealers with semi-automatic pistols. They needed a new gun.

When Karl Water, a firearm salesman based in the U.S. first saw a Glock in 1984, his reaction was, “Jeez, that’s ugly.” But the advantages of the pistol soon became apparent. The standard semi-automatic Glock could fire as many as 17 bullets from its magazine without reloading (one equipped with an extended thirty-three cartridge magazine was used in Tucson to shoot Gabrielle Giffords and 19 others). It was built with only 36 parts that were interchangeable with those of other models. You could drop it underwater, toss it from a helicopter, or leave it out in the snow, and it would still fire. It was reliable, accurate, lightweight, and cheaper to produce than Smith and Wesson’s revolver. Made in part of hardened plastic, it was even rumored (incorrectly) to be invisible to airport security screening.

Filled with corporate intrigue, political maneuvering, Hollywood glitz, bloody shoot-outs—and an attempt on Gaston Glock’s life by a former lieutenant—Glock is at once the inside account of how Glock the company went about marketing its pistol to police agencies and later the public, as well as a compelling chronicle of the evolution of gun culture in America.

Within minutes it spread to consume the building’s upper three stories. Firemen who arrived at the scene were unable to rescue those trapped inside: their ladders simply weren’t tall enough. People on the street watched in horror as desperate workers jumped to their deaths. The final toll was 146 peopleA123 of them women. It was the worst disaster in New York City history.

This harrowing yet compulsively readable book is both a chronicle of the Triangle Shirtwaist fire and a vibrant portrait of an entire age. It follows the waves of Jewish and Italian immigration that inundated New York in the early years of the century, filling its slums and supplying its garment factories with cheap, mostly female labor. It portrays the Dickensian work conditions that led to a massive waist-worker’s strike in which an unlikely coalition of socialists, socialites, and suffragettes took on bosses, police, and magistrates. In large part it is a story of working women. Most of the victims of the fire were female immigrants; a majority from Russia and the Ukraine who worked to send their meager wages back home to support their families. In Russia, Jewish women prided themselves on being independent wage earners. Many were in the needle trade, so when they came to the new country their skills coincided with an explosion in the garment industry.

Clara Lemlich, born in the Ukraine, sailed to New York after the horrors of the Kishinev pogrom and became the sole supporter of her family. Grabbing the gavel away from leading male union leaders in a hall packed to the raftersAone-upping Samuel GompersAshe incited the first waist factory strike in 1909, a strike that would become 40,000 strong in a few months time and made up of mostly female workers.

The Triangle Factory was in a new building at Washington Place and Greene, and although it was an efficient, light-filled workplace filled with light, the owners Isaac Harris and Max Blanch, Jewish immigrant garment makers themselves who had made good, failed to follow the few safety codes then on the books. Their negligence, plus the fact that the new fire truck ladders only went up to the sixth floor short of the inferno on the eight and ninth floors, turned a lovely spring day in March, a Saturday just after closing, into a living hell. Many people were on the streets leaving work witnessed workers jumping to their deaths, bodies covering the fire trucks for an unprecedented carnage.

The trial that follows was one of the most sensational in New York history. Despite the community’s outrage, Manhattan’s flamboyant defense attorney, Max D. When did you start Dogfish Head Brewery, and what was your inspiration?
We opened Dogfish Head in 1995. At that time, we were the smallest commercial brewery in the country. We wanted to make beers that weren’t referencing commercially dominant styles and beers that incorporate exotic ingredients from around the globe. Or as we call it: Off-centered ales for off-centered people.

What effect has being the host of Brew Masters on Discovery Channel had on the brewery and/or the Dogfish Head brand?
We’ve been very fortunate that demand for our off-centered ales has been beyond our ability to make them for the last eight years. So the show hasn’t helped us sell more beer but it has helped spread the word about Dogfish and about the craft brewing renaissance happening around the globe right now. We’ve had a blast doing the Brew Masters show, and I am most proud of the moments in it that celebrate how talented and passionate all of my co-workers are as they do their jobs. Also, the show does a great job of demystifying the brewing process and makes it approachable for people just getting into all of the amazing and diverse beers that are being made by small indie breweries now.

What can readers expect to get out of this new updated and revised edition of Brewing Up a Business?
There’s still great stuff on what we learned at Dogfish as we started our business, but there is now more content devoted to ideas we’ve incorporated to grow our business. With chapters on utilizing social media (my wife Mariah is the queen of this at Dogfish) and differentiating your product or service in a crowded marketplace.

What’s in store for the future of Dogfish Head?
Lots of new and exotic beers, for sure. There will also be a Brew Masters episode centered around a brewpub we are working on that will be on a rooftop in New York City called Eataly. The restaurant will be run by Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich and Dogfish. Birra Del Borgo (Rome) and La Baladin (Turin) are the contributing breweries to the project. We’ve expanded our brewery and our website. We plan to build a bigger distillery and open another pub in 2012. Mostly, we just want to keep putting the where in Delaware and the mental in experimental.

With many detailed examples from companies that have put time-based strategies in place, such as Federal Express, Ford, Milliken, Honda, Deere, Toyota, Sun Microsystems, Wal-Mart, Citicorp, Harley-Davidson, and Mitsubishi, the authors describe exactly how reducing elapsed time can make the critical difference between success and failure. Give customers what they want when they want it, or the competition will. Time-based companies are offering greater varieties of products and services, at lower costs, and with quicker delivery times than their more pedestrian competitors. Moreover, the authors show that by refocusing their organizations on responsiveness, companies are discovering that long-held assumptions about the behavior of costs and customers are not true: Costs do not increase when lead times are reduced; they decline. Costs do not increase with greater investment in quality; they decrease. Costs do not go up when product variety is increased and response time is decreased; they go down. And contrary to a commonly held belief that customer demand would be only marginally improved by expanded product choice and better responsiveness, the authors show that the actual results have been an explosion in the demand for the product or service of a time-sensitive competitor, in most cases catapulting it into the most profitable segments of its markets.
